What's Actually Happening in Plaza Midwood This Fall: New Kitchens, One Mile Race, and Midwood Park's Milestone Crawl

Ask a Plaza Midwood resident what's happening in the neighborhood this fall and you'll get one of two answers, depending on which feed they follow. The Axios Charlotte reader will tell you about the new restaurants filling in around Commonwealth Avenue. The Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association reader will tell you about the race down The Plaza and the costume parade at Midwood Park. Both answers are correct. Neither one is complete. For six weeks this September and October, both calendars are running at once, and most people in this neighborhood are only watching half of it.

Next Weekend's Grand Opening Has a Built-In Limit

If you've driven past 1306 Central Avenue this summer, you've seen La Vecina taking shape next to Moo & Brew. The outdoor Latino fusion spot, run by the same team behind Moo & Brew and Bocao Sushi, soft opened in August with limited hours and has been adding pieces ever since. Sunday brunch started August 23. Lunch service began the following week. Coffee and breakfast tacos are still coming this fall. The full grand opening weekend lands September 11 through 13.

The detail worth knowing before you go: La Vecina will never have indoor seating. Co-owner Ken Thomas has said the walk-up counter and standing tables are the whole concept, built for an open-air, beachside-taco-stand feel with house music on weekends. Thomas has said the space will eventually be winterized rather than enclosed, though he hasn't said exactly when that happens. For now, there's no indoor fallback on a rainy or cold night. Plan around the weather, not the menu.

A Race the Restaurants Didn't Bring

Two weeks after La Vecina's grand opening, a different kind of event takes over the same neighborhood, run by an organization that predates any of this year's restaurant openings by decades. The Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association hosts the Midwood Mile on September 26, a series of timed heats down The Plaza itself, the tree-lined boulevard the neighborhood is named for. The Family Mile starts at 4 p.m., the Women's Mile at 4:20, the Men's Mile at 4:30. Runners with dogs and parents with strollers are welcome in the family heat.

The after-party lands at Resident Culture Brewing, which is worth pausing on. Resident Culture's original taproom sits inside a revitalized old warehouse the family has owned since 1982, well before Commonwealth's development had a single tenant signed. Registering for the Midwood Mile gets you a free drink redemption there after the race, which means the newest thing on the neighborhood's fall calendar and one of its oldest businesses end up sharing the same Saturday.

Where Commonwealth Actually Stands Right Now

The restaurant feed makes it sound like everything on Commonwealth Avenue has already arrived. That's not quite accurate, and the gap between announced and open matters if you're deciding where to actually eat this month.

Postino is the one to watch. The Phoenix-based wine bar, known for a Monday and Tuesday deal pairing a bottle of wine with a bruschetta board for $25, has had a Plaza Midwood location in the works since last summer. As of late May, reporting described the opening as targeted for "later this summer," without a confirmed date. If it's open by the time you read this, that's recent news. If it's not, you're not missing anything yet.

The Other Anniversary Nobody's Posting About

While the food press tracks Commonwealth's tenant list, the neighborhood association is quietly running an event that's been going since before most of these storefronts existed. Fall Crawl returns to Midwood Park on October 24. Last year's event was the association's 19th annual, which puts this year on track to be the 20th. The format hasn't changed much in two decades: a costume parade that marches from the park to The Vine Church for Trunk-or-Treat, a full day of live music at the park's amphitheater, food trucks, and local vendors.

It's easy to read the new restaurant wave and the neighborhood association's calendar as two different stories about two different Plaza Midwoods, one chasing national buzz and one holding onto tradition. The more useful read is that both are drawing people to the same handful of blocks on the same weekends. The Midwood Mile ends at Resident Culture. Fall Crawl ends at Midwood Park, a five-minute walk from Central Avenue's newest patio. You don't have to pick a side. You just have to know both things are happening.

What This Means for Your Next Six Weeks

If you only follow restaurant news, you'll know about La Vecina's grand opening but miss the Midwood Mile registration deadline. If you only follow the neighborhood association's newsletter, you'll show up for Fall Crawl without knowing Postino might finally be open by then.
