Plaza Midwood's Holiday Season Has a New Address on Lyon Court

October 29, 2026

In September, posters reading "MISSING: THE PLOT" went up around Charlotte. Each one had a QR code that led to a ransom-note page, and the page invited people to come dressed in black to a small Plaza Midwood courtyard for a mock funeral. The business being buried was a name. Plot Twist, the coffee-and-cocktail bar at 1518 Lyon Court, was becoming The Lost Plot, as CharlotteFive reported.

The stunt says something about the address. The posters weren't pointing people to Central Avenue or Commonwealth. They were pointing to Lyon Court, a short lane where three neighboring storefronts now carry most of Plaza Midwood's small-business holiday calendar for 2026.

Three Storefronts in About Fourteen Months

The courtyard took shape quickly. Trope Bookshop opened its storefront at 1516 Lyon Court on March 1, 2025. Owner Katie Mitchell had been running a mobile romance bookstore before that. WFAE described it as a romance-only shop with more than 900 titles, ranging from contemporary and historical romance to romantasy and darker subgenres.

Wiloe Home & Gift opened next door at 1520 Lyon Court later in 2025. Its co-owners are Karly Allison-Poe and Tanya Wilson, according to Axios Charlotte.

The third space, between the two, was the biggest project. Nikki Velazquez and her husband, Eric Flanigan, took over a 1,627-square-foot former auto shop and planned to open in April 2026, CharlotteFive reported that spring. The Charlotte Business Journal put their investment in the conversion at $350,000. The bar held its grand opening on May 8 in the renovated garage, "tucked behind Trope Bookshop and Wiloe Home & Gift."

By September 2026, the cluster was established enough for Axios Charlotte's neighborhood guide to make it the guide's one "shop local" recommendation for Plaza Midwood. The guide described the three as "a cluster of women-owned businesses just off Central Avenue."

The Mural Changed Its Name in September

That same Axios guide still lists the bar as Plot Twist, the name it carried until late September.

In late August, a Texas book bar that had trademarked the Plot Twist name sent the Charlotte bar a cease-and-desist letter. According to CharlotteFive, the two filings had crossed within days of each other. The bar, which employs 22 people, also had to start a new Instagram account over the summer, and many Charlotteans assumed it had closed.

The owners chose to rebrand and keep the word regulars already used. Velazquez explained the choice to CharlotteFive:

"People refer to us as Plot. They say, 'I'm going to Plot. Come grab a drink at Plot.' And we don't have to remove Plot. Plot is still part of our name."

Artist Carla Garrison-Mattos was scheduled to update the outdoor mural on Monday, Sept. 28, so the new name would greet customers starting the next day. Anyone who stopped going in August, or who is working from an older guide, can expect the same courtyard, the same menu format and a different name on the wall.

The Court's Calendar, Now Through Dec. 21

With all three doors open, Lyon Court has a dense holiday calendar for a lane with only three storefronts. Here is what Wiloe and Trope have posted:

  • Nov. 1 through Dec. 21, Wiloe. Shoppers can come in, scan the items they like, and Wiloe will print the wish list and keep it on file for family to shop from.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 10, Divine Barrel Brewing. Trope's November book club meets off-site with author B.B. Reid. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the meeting starts at 7, and tickets are $5.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 17, 6:30 p.m., Trope. Lauren Connolly holds a launch and signing for her "creepy cozy romantasy."
  • Wednesday, Nov. 18, Trope. Catherine Cowles brings her Beneath a Midnight Moon Tour to the shop, joined by Maggie Gates and Nisha Sharma.
  • Thursday, Nov. 19, 6 to 8:30 p.m., Wiloe. Mahjong with Mrs. Merriman offers beginner lessons plus intermediate and advanced open play. The cost is $40, and the session needs at least eight registrations or it will be canceled.
  • Saturday, Nov. 28, Wiloe. Small Business Saturday shopping during regular hours.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 1, 7 p.m., Divine Barrel Brewing. Trope's December Dark Romance Book Club discusses Tate James' NoFear.
  • Saturday, Dec. 5, Wiloe. The Holiday Hop and Merry Midwood Market, plus a Caddis Eyewear trunk show from noon to 4.
  • Thursday, Dec. 17, 6 to 8:30 p.m., Wiloe. The final Mahjong night of the year, with the same format and $40 price.
  • Dec. 21, Wiloe. Last-minute shopping, which is also the last day of the wish-list program.

Wiloe's Mahjong nights come with light refreshments, which the calendar says are "typically bubbles and Culture Shop charcuterie," and a 10% store discount during the event, with local art excluded. The Culture Shop is a few blocks away at 1425 Kennon Street. It has its own holiday event, a "Passport to the Holidays" wine tasting on Nov. 10 that requires a preorder. The court sells what it carries and buys from neighbors for what it doesn't.

Dec. 5 Is Where the Court Meets the Rest of the Neighborhood

The Merry Midwood Market isn't new. In 2024, it was held on Dec. 8 with a tree lighting and was billed as an annual event hosted by the Plaza Midwood business district. A Plaza Midwood Merchants Association spokesperson commented on it in V101.9's preview. In 2025, it was held on Sunday, Dec. 7, as a free market with more than 40 vendors, according to Axios Charlotte.

The 2026 version moves to a Saturday, Dec. 5, and changes shape. Wiloe's calendar names the shop at 1520 Lyon Court as the event's location and describes the format this way: "Explore pop‑ups hosted alongside beloved Plaza Midwood businesses, all connected by a free Jump Transit shuttle that makes it easy to hop between multiple locations and experiences throughout the neighborhood." The listing sets the market from noon to 4 p.m. and Santa Ray from 5 to 7 p.m. It also notes a "NoDa Krampus Krawl" later in the evening and tags Plaza Midwood, Wiloe and JUMP Transit.

Not everything is set yet. The listing says pop-up vendors will be "announced at a later date," and it doesn't publish shuttle stops. The best guide to how the day might work is the June 2026 Midwood Market, which used the same shuttle-and-host format. The Plaza Midwood Merchants page for that event listed Wiloe, Improper Pig, The Painted Rooster, DTR Plaza Midwood, Moonwolf, Burial Beer, Common Market and Moxie Mercantile as host locations, with free JUMP rides between them. That was June's route. December's may differ.

What is already fixed is that Lyon Court is a starting point. Wiloe's own calendar puts the Caddis trunk show inside the market hours, so a stop at 1520 lands during the busiest part of the day. The Lost Plot's grand opening was in May, so this will be its first Merry Midwood Market under any name.

Planning Around the Court

A few practical points follow from the dates above.

The wish list works best early. Wiloe's program runs from Nov. 1 through Dec. 21. A list made in the first week of November gives family the whole season to shop from it, including Small Business Saturday and the Dec. 5 market.

Trope's two biggest November nights are back to back. The Connolly launch on Nov. 17 and the Cowles tour stop on Nov. 18 are on consecutive evenings in the same small shop. Its two book clubs meet off-site at Divine Barrel Brewing, so check the venue before heading to Lyon Court.

Mahjong depends on registrations. Either session can be canceled if fewer than eight people sign up, so register early rather than planning to walk in.

Dec. 5 runs into the evening. The market closes at 4, and Santa Ray arrives at 5. That hour in between lines up with The Lost Plot's menu, where each flavor profile can be ordered as a hot or cold cafe drink, a cocktail or a mocktail. Watch the Instagram accounts tagged on the listing, @plazamidwood, @wiloeco and @jumptransit, for vendors and shuttle stops as they're announced.
